It depends on the rest of the story. I mean what kind of conversation were they having? Friendly? Sexual? Does the conversation give you a reason not to trust him? If you really care for this guy and want to make it work then go ahead and try to make it work but let me tell you, if this conversation has bruised your trust in him and the relationship, it will never be the same. You didnt give exact details but if he's randomly seeking out new girls to flirt, flatter, chat and other things with it is not harmless in MY opinion. He should be doing these things with you. Not random strangers that are perfect and have no bad days, getting sick, or other things that go along with real life outside the internet world.

He probably feels like its just 'harmless' and shes just 'nice'. In reality they are complete strangers chatting it up and finding interests.
